ALCHEMIZE SUFFERING INTO PROMISE

A Note From the Artist

Lately, I’ve been meditating on Marina Abromovic’s Balkan Baroque, in which she sat all day in the Venice sun scrubbing bloody cow bones to illustrate the atrocities of war. There is an overwhelming amount of chaos and pain in our realm, swirling around, tempest-like, inside the souls of its inhabitants; the result of this is confusion, despair, rage, and delirium. If we so choose, we can transform these energies into something magnificent, and once that is accomplished, we may help others to do the same; I desire to embark on such a journey - to walk into the dark forest, make friends of the monsters who dwell there, and come out on the other side of a miraculous transformation.

Art is not a luxury. It is a necessity for growth like air or water. It need no longer be confined to genres, categories, and subcategories. As the playwright Terence once wrote, “I am human, I consider nothing human alien to me.” I am delighted to be alive during a time of such great social change and awareness. I look forward to taking part in this new Renaissance.

“I’d be remiss not to mention Ariyan…who makes the most of her short time on the stage and is absolutely believable with her strong Irish accent and quick, natural delivery…Ariyan takes on this supporting role with gusto and gives a strong performance.” -Backstage Baltimore

“…the sexiest scene is between Gallimard and his young, uninhibited mistress (the excellent Ariyan). She sits half-naked on his lap as they discuss the correlation between penis size and warmongering (seriously, it’s juicy pillow talk) and their flirty, dirty sense of freedom is infectious.”-DC Theatre Scene

“Then there is Sir Richard Vernon, given proper prominence in this production and a most suitable portrayal by Ariyan. A world of conflicting conscience plays out in her expressions as her Vernon watches the rebel cause implode…in those productions that don't cut him out altogether—I've seen Vernon stoic, I've seen him scared, I've seen him bewildered. In this production, I see Ariyan maintaining Vernon's noble character” - Shakespeariences
